چکیده

Periodic arrays of 160to 500-nm-wide Si and Cr nanostructures were grown on patterned Si(001) substrates by Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD). Initial patterning was achieved by colloidal self-assembly of 500-nm-diameter polystyrene and 160-nm-diameter silica microspheres which form, during drying from suspension, close-packed hexagonal arrays. Si deposition onto a monolayer of 500-nmdiameter spheres from an angle a, with respect to the surface normal, of 72-, yields a regular array of 2-Am-tall and 450-nm-wide nanopillars. Regular arrays of 300-nm-wide Cr nano-half-moon structures are obtained with a =86-. Cr–Si two-component multi-stack nanopillars were grown on 160-nm-diameter nanospheres by successive Cr and Si deposition sequences with continuous rotation of the substrate about the polar axis. The resulting 300-nm-tall pillars have a large distribution in width, ranging from 120 to 170 nm, show height variations, and some randomness in arrangement. This is in strong contrast to nanostructures on 500-nm spheres which perfectly replicate the underlying microsphere array. The transition to a less ordered morphology is attributed to a competitive growth mode which becomes dominant when the pattern period is smaller than the length scales of surface diffusion and column self-shadowing. That is, in the case of 160-nm patterns, competition between neighboring columns causes exacerbated growth of some columns at the cost of others which die out. This competition is delayed for growth on 500-nm-diameter spheres, yielding regular nanostructure arrays. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanospring pressure sensors grown by glancing angle deposition.

Arrays of Cr zigzag nanosprings and slanted nanorods, 15-55 nm and 40-80-nm-wide, respectively, were grown on SiO2/Si substrates by glancing angle deposition. The arrays exhibit a reversible change in resistivity upon loading and unloading, by 50% for nanosprings and 5% for nanorods, indicating their potential as pressure sensors. The resistivity drop is due to a compression of nanosprings (by ...

Self-assembled broadband plasmonic nanoparticle arrays for sensing applications

Highly ordered noble metal nanoparticle (NP) arrays are produced using a glancing angle deposition on stepped substrates. The versatility of the technique is demonstrated by depositing different metals, resulting in shifts of the resonance positions. The behaviour of the NP arrays grown is predicted by a dipolar model, and it is measured using reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS). Fine tun...

Designing Nanostructures by Glancing Angle Deposition

Three-dimensional nanostructures can be fabricated by the glancing angle deposition technique. By rotating the substrate in both polar and azimuthal directions, one can fabricate desired nanostructures, such as nanorod arrays with different shapes, nanospring arrays, and even multilayer nanostructures. This method offers a fully three-dimensional control of the nanostructure with additional cap...

The Effect of Annealing Treatment and Atom Layer Deposition to Au/Pt Nanoparticles-Decorated TiO₂ Nanorods as Photocatalysts.

The wide band gap of TiO₂ hinders the utilization of visible light in high-performance photocatalysis. Herein, vertically aligned Ti nanopillar arrays (NPAs) were grown by the glancing angle deposition method (GLAD) and then thermally oxidized into TiO₂ NPAs. The metallic nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. And we covered ultrathin...

Competitive growth of Ta nanopillars during glancing angle deposition: Effect of surface diffusion

Periodic arrays of Ta nanopillars were grown onto patterned substrates by glancing angle sputter deposition at growth temperatures Ts ranging from 200 to 900 °C. The Si substrates were patterned using a colloidal suspension of 260-nm-diameter silica spheres that was dispersed to form a two-dimensional close-packed monolayer. At low growth temperatures, Ts 500 °C, nanopillars exhibit regular hex...
